Learn From the Debate(YAP)

It is really a beneficial experience, from the class debate to the inter-class debate.
Here I want to share my gains in the debate:

1. The Preparation

If let me set a percentage of the importance of all the procedures in a debate, the preparation would have the highest, 60%. And in the preparation period, I learned most from the discussion with my teammates.

Firstly, I realized that it is not an easy task to make the discussion really effective. It is because we always have too many opinions, and to identify which are of value and which are not is difficult. So, in this sense, to keep the destination which the discussion is supposed to reach in mind and have a good organization is of crucial importance. As long as you can keep your purposes in mind, you would not be confused or distracted by the thoughts which are off-track, so as to lead the discussion into a right direction.

Secondly, the teamwork is very important, if not the most important. In the discussion, it is unavoidable that the team members are sometimes at variance over some issues. When this happens, the most important thing is to speak out your opinions with respect to each other and consider other’s view objectively and critically. Only with this respect in mind and perform as a team can the team be united and strong enough to win. For me, I really appreciate the members to be sincere and outspoken, and I am also ready to hear any voice of opposition and disagreement, because this is the best way to make our work efficient and effective.

2. In the Debate

Although we have made a good preparation, it is actually not enough to win. A good delivery and rebuttal is required in the process of a debate. What I learned from this debate is to keep a clear mind and make a clear note. In the debate today, in my speaking, I missed some points that should have been involved. Actually, I had made notes about those points, but it was a bad one. As a result, I created a problem that made my speech fail to reach the level it should have reached for myself.

Another thing was that the communication in the debate is not enough. We all concentrated on our own thinking so it is easy to ignore other’s suggestions. To do well in this aspect is not easy; maybe it requires much rapport and more experiences between each other.
All in all, I really learned much in this debate.

At last, I want to say we are really a very good team, Veronica, Cliff, Harry and Susie. And Thank those who contributed their intelligence and efforts to this debate.

  1. Jacky, I'm glad you found the experience beneficial. Reflection is always an important component in every task completed, and I am glad you took time to think over what can be improved and worked on.

  2. Jacky, do you know that I admire your strong logical thinking very much! Every time you attend a debate, I am looking forward to hearing what you will say. I gave you full marks in your fist debate in our group. It really impressed me a lot. Maybe one day I can be either your partener or your opponent to have a contest with you. I have attended a debate in my senior high school. Although it was not so successful, I have learnt a lot from that experience. Next time, when my spoken English improves and I can speak fluently to express my opinions, I want to invite you to attend a debate with me! I hope you will not reject me at that time.
