Future

What do you want to do in the future?

If you are asked the question, what will you response with? I do not know how many people can answer it without too much thinking or hesitation. Even after such thinking and hesitation, even they can answer it but cannot answer it explicitly and determinedly yet. Regardless of what others will react to it, I cannot answer it explicitly and determinedly. I believe that there are many that cannot do so as well. I do not know whether it is right not to pay attention to it because it is common. When I chat on-line with previous classmates, I often feel that they are in the same situation, not knowing what to do in the future, the direction of self-development, or what to do now for the future. In brief, we are in anxiety, panic and fear of the future. Maybe, there is no need to be in such things. But virtually we are in such situations.

Life needs to have the sense of direction out of ambition, or at least objectives in the near future. Otherwise, it will be blind. Blindness is dangerous for everybody including you and me. You are likely to recite “Love is blind” from Shakespeare to prove that sometimes blindness is not bad. It is so indeed. However, when it comes to career or at least job by which we make a living, blindness is not good at all. We do not know where we are willing to go or what objectives we have, or we do not pursue what we like considering reality because we have too many things to worry about, parents, livelihood, present boyfriend or girlfriend or possible spouse, fame, money and other ‘trifles’. Everyone must live first and then he can do what he likes. But we are not willing to be ordinary or, so to speak, most of us want to be extraordinary although we are aware that it is not a piece of cake. Extraordinary persons are very few even though countless people have devoted themselves to achieving their so-called ambitions.

There are too many conflicts between ideals and realities since we got awareness in the childhood. Maybe when we were young, we dreamed to be a writer in the future, but we chose science or engineering when we faced the choice of major out of practical reasons. In reality, we abandon what we like to achieve what is expected of us. It is not a bad thing, generally speaking. As far as I know the majority of people who go through these experiences still live happily. However, someone is not willing to be so, as is said in the movie the Shawshank Redemption. Thus, a series of wonderful things, which many long to go through but dare not to go through, come up. Following so-called successes and miracles come into being. However, who achieve these successes and miracles do not think they are what they are exclaimed by others. That is the whole story, one that been written thousands of times since human came to the earth.

Speaking out truths is not pleasant, because they always torture us. Anyway, let them come to light, which may be better.

  1. As you have said that there is always a distance between reality and ideal. But the thing is that not everyone can realize his dream and live an ideal life. Just as going to university, even though we chose an ideal one in other people’s eyes, we ourselves may not be happy with the decision. But I think that we should not complain too much about this because maybe things will come out to be better than we have expected. Always be optimistic and keep in mind that there is always a way to realize our value in life.

  2. Good that you`re thinking aloud this problem of what to do in the future. It`s difficult to think too far ahead as the world is constantly changing. At each phase, set your goals. For example you`ve the next four years at the university.Set the goals you want to achieve at the end of the 4 years. Then continue from there. You`ll find that you`ll come to many crossroads--you just have to make the right choices. A comforting thought: as you become more mature, you`ll be more certain of what you want to achieve.

  3. I read a book called < What do Chinese Children Need? Dream and Passion> It is very common among Chinese students that they are not clear about what they expect for future, so they seem to have passion for little things. No doubt many freshmen in China don’t know what to do for future.
If you don’t know what to do in the future, you will fear the future. If you have a particular dream, you will also fear the future because you don’t know whether you can make it. It is a fear for the uncertainty. Why we are so afraid of it, just as Tinkle says we be optimistic as Andy in Shswshank’s Redemption, we should always keep, hope is a good thing~

  4. Indeed a very difficult question. However, I feel that if you follow your heart, you really shouldn't go very wrong.
