This semester is very important for me, because I have to improve my English to a high level which can meet the requirement of a university student.
I think the biggest obstacle that I have to overcome is speaking English. Sometimes I feel very shy to speak English with others, because I feel that my English is poor and I am afraid of making a mistake. But I must get over my shortcoming and try to speak English with people. Just as the famous saying “No pain, no gain”, if I am always afraid of making mistakes, I will never improve myself.
In addition, I must improve my writing skills, for that I have to write some dissertations during my study in NUS. I should also expand my vocabulary, because without a plentiful quantity of vocabulary I can’t express myself clearly. So I should try to read various materials to expand my vocabulary as well as to learn different kinds of writing styles. Also I should try to take the words out of my “vocabulary bank” so when I try to express myself or write something I can use some high-level words.
Another important skill I must improve is listening. Because all the subjects will be taught in English, so the most basic thing is that I must be able to understand the teacher. So I should make use of all opportunities to listen to English and improve myself.
On top of the above, I think I should also build up self-discipline, because we are now all by ourselves, nobody will supervise us and we must learn to discipline ourselves. We must keep in mind that we are coming to study in Singapore, so we should always put study first that we can meet the requirement as scholars.

After reading your post, Tinkle, I can see that you are already on your way to mastering the language.
ReplyDeleteIndeed, one important aspect of learning any language is to use it. When I was an exchange student in Vietnam, I could hardly understand what the Vietnamese were saying despite learning the language for close to two years! I made extra effort to befriend more Vietnamese in order to give myself the opportunities to use the language. I must say that for the three months I was in Vietnam, my Vietnamese improved by leaps and bounds, much more than what I'd learned in school in two years!
So yes, go ahead and USE the language! Don't be afraid of making mistakes =>
I am also very shy when it comes to speaking in public. But I have to try my best to overcome that obstacle. Come on! (to you and me)
