What English Has Brought to Me

It has been more than six years since the first time I had an English class. I was in my first year in junior high school and knew nothing about this language. As time went by, I had learnt more and more about the English language and become better and better at it. From all these years of hard work, I have benefitted a lot.

First of all, knowing English enables me to learn a wide range of different ideas. Since English is the most widely spoken language in the world and people from all the other non-English-speaking countries are learning English, I can use English to communicate with people from all over the world.

Besides, by learning English, I am able to read books of various kinds, some even cannot be found in China, and since English has become the International language, I can travel around the world with less difficulty in communication.

Also, knowing English allows me to get to know other forms of culture and helps me understand the world better, which, to a great degree, has broadened my horizon. What’s more? Without knowing English, I wouldn’t have a chance to study in the world-famous NUS today!

After next to two month’s study in Singapore, I again confirmed the importance of the English language. Throughout all these days, I’ve improved my English a lot. I think in the rest of the years, I will continue trying my best to learn English, so that one day I will perfectly master this language and eventually become a global citizen.

  1. Dear Ying Tao

Do you remember a story I shared with the class...about my A/Prof essor for English at NIE/NTU. He comes from China and started to learn English only at the age of 17 (due to the Cultural Revolution in China from the mid 60s to the mid 70s).
You, too can use this real story to motivate yourself as far as the mastering of English is concerned.

  3. I agree with you very much. Learning English benefits us a lot, especially learning English.Although sometimes, someone may complain that it's hard and boring to leanrn English, we still find interesting ways to learn English with fun. We can learn English together and do our best since it improves us a lot.
Besides, it's necessary for us to learn English because it's our communicating language in university. I thind it motivates us, and we believe we can master English well and enjoy our achievement.

  4. I'm sure you will =)

A good way to start will be participating actively in class discussions, as what most of you have already been doing! Keep up the good work!
