Standing at the crossroad in my life, every now and then, I ponder on my future.
To be frank, there always exist many doubts and even a little bit fear when facing an uncertain future. The doubts range from some very practical things such as which major I am going to choose this April to some very big topics such as what the meaning of my life is. These problems are so important for me but always cannot be solved. So they are really bothering sometimes.
For example, the problem of choosing the major. Actually, I have an interest in economy and business. However, unfortunately, we are not eligible to choose such majors because we are supposed to master a major in science or technology. So I have to make decisions among the majors in the faculty of Science, Engineering or SOC. That is really tough for me, because I do not have “feelings” about those majors, I do not know whether I have an interest or not; they seem totally the same to me. So, I am still thinking hard to figure out the truth about myself.
And something about life is bothered, too. Sometimes I feel like to go out to explore something new, to go close to the nature, to lead a cozy and casual life without thinking about any tough things I will come across or even the mission I need to accomplish in my real life. Because I appreciate such life styles as well as the philosophy in it. On the other hand, sometimes I feel like to be very ambitious that I want to be successful in my working career, to have some achievements, even to have my own enterprise. The reason is that I like the job CEOs do, presidents do. They are faced with difficulties, they take risk and they make decisions. I would hopefully enjoy the thrill such jobs will provide me. It seems to be a contradiction. So, I always feel confused by such questions, or maybe by myself. Maybe I do not know myself thoroughly. I have not explored the deepest feelings in the bottom of my heart.
After all, these doubts are inevitable in thinking about the future. Maybe I do not need to worry. Be relaxed and the answers would be emerging one day.

From your post,I have known that you are confused about your future. As to which major I should choose, i feel confused as you do.I am intrested in Civil Engineering, but so many factors pour cold water towards my enthusiasm.which major I should choose....maybe the God could give me a direction. At this end of your post,"Be relaxed and the answer would be emerging one day" was what I want to say to you.You know, I believe in fatalism. In my world, God or fate makes the choice for me.Everything is decided by fate. What I am supposed to do is try my best to perfect the result. To be honest, because of my belief in fatalism, I treat every day as my last day since I have no idea whether the God would want to see me tomorrow. So keeping relaxed and happy is a big portion of my life.
ReplyDeleteFrom what jacky and susie siad I know that you both are not sure waht you will do in the future. Choosing faculty is very difficult espiecally for those who haven't found their interest. For me it is also very difficult even though I have found my interest. I am interested in science as well as EE. But so many thing will bother me if I choose life science, so I may just choose EE.But what what I am trying to tell you is that you should keep your mind clear when choose the faculty.Just image you will study the module and do the work related to the faculty. If you didn't feel boring and were happy doing them. Then you should choose that faculty. finally i want to tell you that once you choose the faculty, never regret and just do your best!

ReplyDeleteFatalism is defined as the belief that you cannot prevent bad things from happening to you. Suggest you use the word 'Fate' instead.
By the way, the doubts and fears expressed by all 3 of you are very normal and to be expected.
Talk to someone who knows you best; that someone could very well be your mother, sibling, ex-school teacher and 'listen to your heart' when you have to make the decision.
The other suggestion is to take things as they come ie Do not use the energy for today to fret over the worries of tomorrow; use tomorrow's energy instead. PS Please take this suggestion in the proper perspective.
Unlike Jacky,I like to learn engineering instead of business. But it still confuses me that which subject I should choose to major in.I went to Open House today to seek for some help but it failed me.I want to choose some subjects in which I can study chemistry and physics. However,it seems to me that only MSE is suitable to me,and MSE is quite tough for us Chinese students.Because our English is not that good while the vocabulary needed if we want to major in MSE is extremely difficult. This is really a dilemma for me.I think many students are facing the same problem as mine,so may God bless us~

ReplyDeleteHi, Gengxin, don't worry about these things.
ReplyDeleteI think if you don't try to do something about the majors, you won't know which is your favourite. Actually, every major can arouse your attention, however, you have to discover it as you know more about it, I think. Openhouse is a good chance to get some information, I suggest you attend it, and I believe, you will find your favourite faculty.
About the meaning of the life, take you time. I think, sometimes the life is like the lake within sand. The lake is clear when it moves slightly or stays. It seems that the faster you run, the harder the truth appears. Don't bear the pursuit for meaning of life, just enjoy everyday you own.
Jacky, I am afraid I have the same problem with you. I am a little confused about my future. But one thing is always in my mind: do whatever you like. I find I am interested in maths a lot. Every time I solved a maths problem, I felt a sense of achievement. So I finally decided to choose the applied maths as my major. I knew many students went to the university every weekend to inquire the information about the majors. They still didn't have a clear idea of what major they would choose. I hope you can think carefully and make a smart decision. I believe you can do whatever once you have made up your mind. You know, I always admire your wonderful ideas in your mind. I think you are a sociable person. I wish you can be succeeded in your promising future!
ReplyDeleteIt seems hard to decide which faculty should we to choose. There are many factors you need to think about, including your ability, your interest, the prospect of your faculty and so on. However, I think it's the interest of you that most matters. It's most important that finding what you really have passion in. Although everyone has their own strengthes, it's not the strength that determins your major. If you really have passion in a major, your passion will push you on no matter how difficult it is. However, it's also a problem to find out what's your interst. In this case, we see the importance of knowing ourselves better.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your responses, my friends. Maybe we all more or less have some doubts about majors, exams,or in other words, future. I know it is normal to feel confused about our future. I just can't help wondering sometime. But I always tend to be optimistic and I like a slogan: "future is exciting because of its uncertainty." If we know everything, it is no point exploring anymore. So, keep doubting, keep exploring~~~
