How can I be successful as a student this semester

This semester, which is special and exciting to me, is the first time I go abroad. I’m very happy to have the chance to study in NUS, which is one of the top universities in the world. As we know, to study in a foreign country, the most important subject is language. So in this semester, my goal is to study English well.

I have seven months to study English before I enter the university. In this period of time, I will try to master as many new words as I can and put them into practice. Though it is a hard task, I want to have a try. The second thing I want to improve is my listening and speaking. In Singapore, it’s more difficult to use English in our daily life than in other countries like USA or UK. So I must use the time during class to practice my listening and speaking, in order to understand the lessons taught in NUS and communicate with other foreign people. The third thing I want to do is to build up my reading comprehension. For this part, I may use the library and the Internet to read. At the beginning, I may read some short, interesting stories or newspapers to build up my interest of reading. Then, I may read some academic books to enrich my knowledge. The last thing I want to do is to improve my writing. I’m trying to learn some writing skills and I want to put them into practice and write good articles.

Besides learning English well, I want to take part in some activities, to have different experiences, to meet more people and make more friends. So we can help each other in the future.

I wish I can be a successful student this semester and also have a happy time.

how can I be successful in this semester

This semester is special to me, because it is my first experience of studying in a foreign country. Without the careful caring from my parents, I have to decide and solve things on my own.
I am clear that I should study hard in this semester to lay a solid foundation for my future study in the university. I have made up my mind to pursue the major of mathematics in the future. I am interested in the world economy and sales. So I want to use mathematical theory into analyzing the trend of the price of the product. I think I should put aside some time to read the magazine: the economist. But it is still hard for me to understand many words of it. So I try to read some easier ones to enrich my vocabularies. I have planned to finish reading some novels at the first stage which are all interesting.
After having mastered a large number of vocabularies, I will try to read something related to scientific research. And I will also read newspaper and magazines to open a door to learn what is happening in the world.
Every week, I will put aside some time to learn science. It is not just for passing the exams but for preparing for my future study.
It may be hard for me to achieve all these plans. But I will try my best to study while entertaining myself now and then. I can make good use of my time to study. I think I already have a better environment to learn English than my friends in China. I shouldn’t waste it. And only through hard time can I achieve my ambitions in the future.

A Big Thank You

Dear Students

We say a big thank you for having worked hard in giving us your reasons for liking to learn English. Good reasons were put forward but above all, you did not fail to mention deeper sensibilities by noting your learning, firstly, as a personal choice. Moreover, learning English well can become a 'habit', which is such a simple word but which has deep significance because your desire to master English is positively, a Good Habit. In addition, when there is 'passion' for such learning, you are certainly moving in the right direction.

Keep up your positive attitude towards your learning of English.

My Chinese New Year in Singapore

Spring Festival, what Singaporeans call Chinese New Year, is just one of the New Years here, among Indian New Year, Malay New Year and so on. So the people here do not celebrate it as we Chinese do. In order to let us feel happy, not lonely, like at home. The seniors who come from HIT as well, always take the juniors to their halls to celebrate Spring Festival together. This year, our seniors took us to NTU to spend the Chuxi Eve.

On Jan 25th, after lunch, at about one thirty pm, we set off from Eton Hall to NTU. After a long journey, in a small room of Hall Six, NTU, we met our friends who came from HIT but went to NTU. We greeted each other and everybody was happy and smiling. Then some went out to play basketball, some, including me, went to play computer games, and the others went to make dumplings.

At about eight o’clock, we got together again, to watch the Spring Festival Evening. When I was in China, I didn’t like to watch the evening and I think it was so boring and terrible. But when I was here, far away from my home, I was so glad to watch it. The evening was so genial. Especially when the host said, “Wish all the Chinese people abroad happy new year”, I was so moved that I almost burst into tears. We ate dumplings and drank soft drinks while we were watching the evening. We laughted happily and forgot the homesickness.

At about nine thirty, I went out to make telephone calls to my family and friends in China. This was the first time for me to spend the Chuxi Eve alone and abroad. I missed my family and friends , and they missed me , too. We said “happy new year ” to each other. I told them I was fine and not to worry about me. And they did the same thing.

The time flew. Soon it was twelve o’clock. We celebrated the new year’s coming, then our friends must go back to their hostel, Perry Hall. We walked with them to the bus stop and separated reluctantly.

At last, we took taxis to back to Eton Hall. What a nice night. Next year, I will be a senior. I’m going to do the same thing to my juniors. To hand the custom down is really a meaningful thing!

How can I be successful as a student this semester?

This semester, bridging course, is obviously important, because we have to adapt ourselves to all the things here and improve our English to be good enough to understand what teachers say and the meaning of the questions on the paper in exams in only six months. It’s really a heavy task, isn’t it?So how can I make it in such a short time? It seems to be out of the question!

But it can be done. In order to make it, I think I have to do the things as follows.

First, hardworking and self-discipline are necessary. Why do I put these two things together instead of stating them one after the other? It was just a piece of cake for us Chinese students to study hard when we were in China. We could study ten or even twelve hours a day. It sounds amazing but it’s true. However, many of us lost themselves when they were in Singapore. They were far away from their parents. They could do many things they wanted to do but parents didn’t let them do. They would never work hard. Without hardworking, especially during bridging course, we may pass the exams as well because of our excellent intellegence, but we won’t gain the knowledge that we really need in our future. So self-discipline guarantees my hardworking, meanwhile, my hardworking guarantees that I can study well.

Second, I must be healthy. In another word, I must exercise regularly. As it is known to us all, health is the premise to anything else. A dying man will never be sucessful. Although the hardworking, just as what I said, is important, I should not study all day long. Without health, the high mark makes no sense. So I should look upon exercise equeally as study. No matter it is, swimming, playing ball games or just walking, it’s ok.Just do it and keep myself lively.

So that’s what I think I need to do to be sucessful as a student this semester. Thank you for reading.

You must love the English Language

Dear Friends

I read a number of your blogs on your various reasons for learning the English Language but, to me, few of them would be as effective as if you would treat the Language as your "lover 爱人" and accord it the same level of importance/priority in your life (as your lover)and put aside a substantial amount of your time getting to know it as intimately as possible.

When the learning gets tough, it will be your love for the Language which will see you through (all your mental blocks, struggles to find the right words/phrases to express yourself etc).

Remember: One BIG Step is made up of many, many smaller ones!

Why I like to study English

In this modern society, all of us should study English, especially when you are in a English-speaking country.
There is a saying goes that, what under a language is a culture. So why I like to study English is because I can acquire some of the knowledge of a different civilization , even it somehow seems shallow.
When I study the English , I always try to find the interesting aspects .For instance, I have listened to a lot of English songs, it did give me a sensibility of English. I can still remember some of the words:
When I was young I listen to the radio ,
Waiting for my favorite songs
When they play I’d sing alone
It made me smile…

A empty street a empty horse
I hold inside my heart
I’m all alone
The rooms are getting smaller…

Some of the words certainly impressed me a lot, my favorite song is Hotel California. The prelude is like a flow of water, so fluently make you feel like flying in the sky upon the cloud. So perfect.
Also there are stories behind the songs, there are metaphors behind. These are all interesting things I can find.
I think what you need to study English is to usse it like our tuitor said 'jump into the pool to study to swim'
Interests is a great tool

Why I Like to Learn English

At first, English is just a tool for communicating to me. I just regarded English as a subject.

But when I master a large number of vocabularies now, I come to realize that there are many benefits to learn English and I begin to enjoy learning English.

First, I find there are fewer problems for me to read some famous newspaper and magazines written in English-spoken countries. These reading materials open a new world for me to know the world. I don’t need to relay on reading interpret any more.

Secondly, I get to know the difference of expression between English and Chinese. One can always finds a better way to interpret English into Chinese, and vice verse. So when I read some materials, some new ways to improve my interpretation came to my mind. So I find it challenging to learn English well.

In a word, learning English becomes a habit rather than a task to me. I enjoy learning English.

Why I Like To Learn English

As I'm sort of emotional, I can‘t tell the reasons why I like something without a careful thinking. Thus, to me, this composition is really a tough work. It's a fiction that I'm passionate for English. I just like some small quite glamorous details of English.

We have been learning Chinese since we were born, so coming across with English is really a distinct experience. English words consist of letters, while Chinese uses characters, getting to know a different way of expressing is just like opening windows and embracing with fresh air coming in.

Each note shares the same pronunciation with one particular word in the movie sound of music , which can act as an evidence that at times reading English is like intoning  melody.

In addition, you can get a close look to western culture during the process of reading English materials and learning phrases, puns etc, which I, who am curious about different cultures, appreciate very much.

In communication, English plays an important role, enabling you to make new friends, exchange ideas, etc. Apart from that, English makes you have access to the art of playing with words in western countries. In the world lit up by English words, whose beauties can't be fully conveyed by translation, you can go straightly to the charm of lyrics, poetries, the original works of masterpieces with the help of English, to me it is extraordinarily enjoyable.

Look forward to more enjoyments on English.

Why I like to learn English
I like to learn English, and I have some reasons for that. As we know,English is a international language, and we will incraese our career opportunity and deel weth more English-speaking people if we master English well.Besides,I can go to many places I like to broaden my horizons and enrich my life. Moreover,I can read books like novels written by famous writer in English, and I can learn more about the culture of other countries.
What's more, leanrning English is a challenging and interesting thing for me.So I like to learn English from the bottom of my heart let alone many jobs need good English proficiency.
So,these are the reasons why I like to learn English.

Why I like to learn English

Many students in China is afraid of English. Their can't learn English well. however, I like to learn English. There are many reason that I love English.
Firstly, I want to communicate fluquently with foreigners. When I was a child, I admire the person can speak English very fast. I don't remenber the reason why I admire them, perhaps they look so cool. Today, I am desparated to speak English well because I want to have further communication with foreign students.
Secondly, I want to make the voice of Chian thronghout the world. If I can impress my opinions and foreign students can understand me well, I think that I can show my mother tongue to other country's students. They may like to learn the bueatiful language. If there are more and more people in the world learn Chinese, I think that Chinese may be an international language. I just make effort to make a difference.
Thirdly, I think that English itself also worth learning. It is brief but contain almost everything. There are many interesting things in English language. There are mottos, idioms and proverbs. I am fond of them, because they are not only interesting, but also contain a lot of knowlegde.
These are some of the reasons that I like to learn English, and I think that we should love English no matter we love the language itself or just want to use as a tool. You will go further if you learn English well.

Why I Like to Learn English

As we all know, English has become an international language which people from all over the world are learning. It is getting more and more important with the increase of global communication. For me, learning English is simply a flow of fun, I enjoy it for every single minute.

Imagining I could be able to talk to a native speaker just like I talk in my first language, I will be really happy and excited. It also makes me feel motivated when thinking I can learn a lot of new things in English which I do not yet know. Besides, I’ve always been interested in the culture of some English speaking countries, such as the United States or Great Britain, learning English can help me understand them better and deeper. Moreover, if I speak English fluently, it will be a lot easier for me to go on a travel in the world, which I’ve been always dreaming to do.

Above all, I love language in general; comparing English with other languages is really fun, and I’m just enjoying it.

Learning English,A Lot Of Fun!

I begun to learn English when I was 10 years old, at that time, I didn't have many ideas why I need to learn English, but my parents told me that it was important to learn it well, because we needed to keep in touch with the rest of the world and English was exactly the tool we need. I remember that the phonetic symbol was the first thing I learned about English, after a few weeks, I found that the pronunciation and grammar were quite different between English and Chinese, there are stressing points in English words but we don’t have, the verbs’ forms would be changed in different situations, but we needn’t. I found it interesting, so I started to learn English spontaneously. As the time I learned English became longer, and my knowledge about English evolved, more and more I felt that English was quite different from Chinese, not only the pronunciation and the grammar, but the culture behind the language. Someone says that when you are learning a language, you are learning a culture. I quite agree about it. By learning English, I knew that 13 was an unfortunate number in western culture, and don’t ask someone about people about ages or salaries because it is considered as impolite……
All these things attracted me so much, and English seems more and more interesting to me, so, I love learning English and I wound keep on learning it.

Why I like to learn English?

I started to learn English about eight years ago.At the very beginning ,I just found it interesting because the words and their pronounciation was quite different from my mother tongue.
As I got to know more about English gradually,I found it fascinating. Just like Chinese, when we combine words in different ways, it turns out to be different meaning. Maybe sometimes we find it confusing, but I think it's the fascination of the language.
During my leisure time,I like listening to music and watching movies. Sometimes I find English movies very difficult to understand ,that's because my English is so poor that I can only understand the general meaning. So I know that I should learn English well,so that I can understnd the songs and movies without others translating them into Chinese for me.
In the long term,I need to learn English well so that I have more opportunities to get a good occupation and have a better future.

Why do I like to learn English

I like to learn English very much. There are three main reasons why I like it .
Firstly, learning English can increase our career opportunities. As you know, the world is becoming more and more international. And many companies have international cooperations with companies abroad . If you want to get a position in such companies , you should at least master English , and the level of English can directly decide what kind of job you can get.
Secondly, learning English can broaden our horizons. Many latest big events are always published in English first, like some new theories and new inventions. If we know English , we can keep up with the pace of the world. Through English, we can also get to know different kinds of culture and learn many other things.
Thirdly, learning English can also enrich our life. By using English,we can communicating with many foreigners and make friends with them, which can make our life more colourful. We can also enjoy many Hollywood films before they are interpreted into Chinese.
In all, learning English can bring me a lot of benefits. So I like to learn English!

Why I like to learn English

I have been learning English for several years .To my mind learning English is of great interests and importance.
I enjoy learning English. I always want to try something new and as English is quite different from my mother-tongue, I hope I can be a competent user of this language. In order to improve my English, I watch English movies. I like many kinds of movies, especially comedies and movies about fictions. Watching movies can help me to learn English faster and I can also know cultures in different counties. I have a lot of fun in doing so.
I like to learn English also because it’s important. Today, English has become a world language. For examples: people in the world communicate with others in English, new studies are written in English and latest news is usually reported in English. Knowing how to use this language means getting more information, and in this age successes usually belongs to people who get more information. So English is a useful and important tool for me. I have to learn it well.
In conclusion, English is a beautiful and useful language, I will try my best to be good at English.

Why I Like To Learn English

I like to learn English not just because it is more and more important in are daily life, but also because when I learn English,I can feel very relax and a feel of achievement.

Why I feel relax when I learn English?I just feel sometimes I needn't think too much when I learn English. For example, when I recite new vocabularys,I just rewrite the word over and over again. And I look up the dictionary to know what is meaning of the new word. And I learn who to use this word to make a centense.Ofenly, I try to put it into pactise in our daily life by imaging a clear scene. Then I just feel I'm chatting with other people but not studying.from the real experience of me ,when I was in my senior shool,I often learnt English when I was tireld after learning Math.Becaose I liked reading some magazines when the break time.If I chose a English magazine,I could enjoy myself at the same time when I learnt.I think it is a very effective way for me to learn English also.

Another reason why I like to learn English is that I can feel a kind of achievement. Why I feel this?Becaose after I learn English,I can communicate with most of foriegners,as we all know ,English is so common.Apart from this ,I can also know some culture about other countries.Sometimes,it is really very differcult for me to learn English,I felt that I can't understand the auther's intention when I was reading,I felt that I can't catch the point view of others' speech. But I don't want to quit.So after a period of hard working,I made improvement. Then I would feel achievement.

Why I like to learn English?

In retrospect, I have been studying English for 7 years. “Why I like Englsh?” I often ask myself. There are three reasons, I think.

Firstly, learning English makes me feel good. The enjoyment from learning English is just like the feast music gives me. When I speak English, I find myself singing. The intonation of the words is undulating which makes me feel comfortable. When I read, the letters appear to say hello to me. Though mostly, they know me but I can’t recognise them.

Secondly, learning English helps me broaden my horizen .As we all know, the world is becoming smaller and smaller. People from different countries can communicate in English .”one world ,one language”. So it is essential for us to learn English well. I can listen to BBS or some other English programes. From those English programe, not only current affairs but also intersting news can we get.

Thirdly, learning English can make it possile for me to travel around the world. I like traveling . If I can learn English very well, then I can have less difficulity during my journey.

Learing English is becoming more and more popular. I like learning English, though it may be a difficult job for me .

Thank you for reading.

I love it, with considerable passion.

I used to regard English as a necessity merely, a tool with which I am able to have access to all categories of books and lectures regardless of any language barrier, thus achieveing my intended academic level. However, as time goes by, I feel a touch of sentimenal attachment to it.
As I turn inwards, I sense more, eventually become passinate for it, and with good reason. I appreciate some smooth, ambiguous but thought-provoking terms used. For instance,We describe those who are suffering something but trying hard to recover "on the bounce", and depict those who have been dismissed but struggle to seek for new fortune "between jobs", etc. These expresssions reveal the power of words in English, which is quite distinguished from other more precise but dull languages.
This noon in canteen,I happened to hear a chat between two singaporeans who swithched language freely between Madarin and English. I was deeply impresssed, and came to a realisation that the highest level of the language proficiency is the ability to talk and write with no attention paid to the language you are using but to the focus of your topic attentively , that is to say, beyond language. Therefore, I wish, one day I am able to handle a conversation beyond language, or have a nice dream in English but never feel uneasy when waking up.
The spring festival is drawing near, and it is time for a New Year's resolutions to be set. What is your big plan?Take a time and consider.
Just keep in mind: life is beautiful, and so is English...

Why I like to learn English

You can say many reasons why you like to learn English. For example,it is a widely used language all over the world .All significant events use English as the official language. It is a fact that we can not deny and must accept. However, those reasons can not become the reasons why I like to learn English.

The reason why I like to learn English is that I would like to know western culture.Perhaps you think that we can know western culture by reading books written in Chinese. But you can not know western culture exactly by reading books written in Chinese as you can not know eastern culture exactly by reading books written in English.

As a human being,we should not only know native culture to improve ourselves, which has been explained by many excellent masters. As a people, the nation must make cultural exchange to develope better, which has been proved by history. Therefore,English becomes a must if you want to learn true western culture.

My reason is so simple, but I think it is the only reason I can offer to you.

Thank you for reading.

From GUO JINLONG

Why I like to learn English

With the globe becoming a village, the proliferation of English seems to be a trend. For my speaking, there are several reasons why I like to learn English.
To begin with, English as a global lingua franca makes for cross-cultural communication. For instance, today eight in every ten international conferences designate English as their chief working language; and ninety-eight percent leading scientific journals in the world are published in English or have an English version. Further, the extensive use of a common language has a unifying effect on people who do not speak the same mother tongue. Common sense informs us that language barriers naturally engender a measure of distrust or alienation while a shared language makes for a sense of belonging and sympathy. Lastly, the expansion of English also enables people like me whose mother tongue is not English to appreciate the English-speaking cultures are among the richest and most dynamic cultures in the world. I have a dream that I can read the English literature in the original language, can comprehend Hollywood blockbusters without having to read the subtitles and do not have to rely exclusively on body language or speaking Chinese while taking to local people.

Why I like to learn English

About this question,I can find plenty of reasons. For example,it's very interesting,it can help me enjoy American films, and it gives me a chance to make friends with foreigners.Among these,I think the basic reason is that I have to learn it well,so I choose to like to learn it.
Speaking English is really necssaray skill. If we can't learn English, how will we begin classes six months late?If we don't know it ,how can we take the opportunity of working in the famous international commpany? If we don't speak it,how can we live outside and experience the life-style of western countries? It's easy to see, learning English is really something we have to do.
This being the case,I begin to seek for the fun that I can have from the learning. As you know,if you manage English, you can enjoy Hallywood blockbusters, you can know more knowledge about history and culture of English-speaking conntries.Besides, you can imagine learning process is just a game, only twenty-six letters make up thousands of words, the words compose colourful sentenses and express different meanings.Isn't it wonderful? And when you manage it ,the sense of satisfaction that you have manage it with is also encouraging, isn't it?
No matter what you have to do,just to like it,find its characters and enjoy it!

Why I like to learn English

As English is becoming a world language and thus a useful tool for people in the world to communicate with one another, more and more people are learning English. I have learnt English for almost ten years. I like to learn English. I have several reasons to support this.

Firstly, learning English is very interesting. It's very interesting to learn a language which has a different pronunciation and grammar with your own language. I regard learning English as playing a game which to put twenty-six letters to different orders to have different meanings to motivate myself.

Secondly, I like chatting with others and making friends with others. As English is an international language, I think it is necessary to learn it well to use it to communicate with other people.

Lastly, since now I’m studying in Singapore, all the lessons are taught in English, I think it is necessary for me to like learning English because I think one who has a positive attitude can learn something better than others, and I really have this attitude.

In summary, although learning English is not an easy task, I like it and I think I can learn it well.

Why I Like to Learn English

I am always saying that I like to learn English, and there are surely some reasons for it.

I started learning English when I was eleven years old .During these years’ English studying, I have built up my vocabulary, sharpened my English communication skills and gained knowledge about grammars, idioms and so on. That’s really an exciting process to see my progress. Gradually, I became fond of English and was engaged in learning it.

There is no doubt that acquiring new knowledge can bring us great satisfaction. In addition, on my part of view, learning a second language is most unique. Because it enables us to feel the power of words in a different way. On account of this, not only does it give me contention of learning, but also broaden my horizon and motive me to read in English. Therefore I was introduced to the gate of splendid English works and enjoyed myself very much by reading those fantastic stories.

Although learning written English is a tough job, oral English is even more difficult. Sometimes I was so desperate that I thought no matter how hard I tried , I would never speak like a native speaker. But my teacher advised me to listen more. So I did as she said, and soon found great interest in it. I realized how beautiful English was and eventually felt like listening and speaking English.

In conclusion, I like to learn English because it enriches my brain , gets me involved in reading and its pronunciation and intonation are very wonderful to me.

Why I like to learn English

There are some reasons why I like learn English.
At first I thought speaking English was very cool, because before I entered junior high school my sister and her classmate could speak a foreign language like a foreigner and I could not understand. So I envied them very much, and I was looking forward to learning English.
When I was in junior high school, I was eagerly to learn, and my teacher was very nice and kind and she taught very well, so I did well in English. So I liked English more, because I can use it to show myself… you know, I was only a child at that time.
When I entered the senior high school I had mastered some words and phrase and at that time we had a lot of English newspapers and English movies to see. And I was deeply attracted by the Harry Potter series, and I would find everything in magazines or newspapers about Harry Potter and read it. So because of the interesting books I liked English very much. And at that time we knew how important it is to learn English. English is used so widely in the world, and even in China. My teacher told us that we would even have math class that would be had in English. So I study harder in English.
But I also have some difficulty in learning English too. For example, I can’t remember the new words quickly and sometimes I feel difficult to use the new words and phrases.
Now in Singapore I must study English harder than before, because our lessons are in English. And I believe that I can make it to master English well

In the life of reality, the actress of Princess Ann, Audrey Hepburn, also fell in love with the actor of Bradley,Gregory Peck. One was looked upon as the most beautyful woman at that time, the other was looked upon as the most handsome man at that time.Their love was always related to the love of the princess and the prince by the people. However, just like the story in the film,Hepburn and Peck did not get married but they separated in the end, which made the world disappointed. What made all of us more sorry was that they still loved each other deeply, and at the funeral of Hepburn many years later,Peck, who was an old man then, came up to the Hepburn’s body, whispering that she was the woman he loved most forever.

The love in both the film and the real life of them was a tragedy. As the saying goes, the tragedy always moves the people better than the comedy does. That’s why the film with Hepburn and Peck is always memorised by many people I think.

Why I like to learn English

In my personal point of view, first,it's not optional but it's compulsory for me.I have to like to learn English.

Nowadays,as it is known to us all, English is so important that I must handle it skillfully if I want to have a brighter future. If I can't speak Chinese,I just can't communicate with the people around me in China;however,if I can't speak English,I can't communicate with the people all over the world.

Another reason for me is that I want to go to Germany in the future. As my German is not very good, and ofcourse to speak Chinese with the locals just like what I do in Singapore is impossible there, the only way I could find out to communicate with them is through English. So ,to reach my goals,I have to learn English well.

I have to learn English, and I have to speak English fluently as well. But if I have no interest in it,that is to say I don't like to learn English at all,it is impossible for me to make it.Undoubtly, interest is always the best teacher in he world. It can motivate me to do something, and with the motivation,I could do anything well.

Then,on the other hand,English is interesting sometimes.I still remember when I was a young boy,my mother took me to study English in a school far away from my home.I really hated it,but I couldn't do anything but obey my mother's order. As the time went by,I gradually found out that English was sometimes useful and interesting, especially when I discovered surprisingy that I understood some words' meaning in some English movies. In fact,to handle English and put it into practice gives me a sense of success.

Finally, learning English can also improve my languange ability, which is good for my personal development. It is vital as well.

As English is so important and interesting, what is the reason for me to hate to learn it?
